Satan has no tail,
wears no red, has no pitchfork,
doesn't live in heat.

I've seen this devil in the snow
and ice, in the dead of winter.

His name mispronounced,
or misspelled, his yellow hat
the target of rage

I've seen this devil in the rain
and mud, in the dead of the night.

Destroying dreams, hopes
doing what once we all thought
was undoable.

some haiku seem to
convey great length in few words.
this one, though, does not.

one trick is to give
each word in the poem just one
beat. that will do it.

Conversely, suppose
multisyllabic statements
convey brevity.

technically complex
stanzas accelerate one's
perception of time.
